Rhythm & Blues: Speaking to the Soul

Without a doubt my favourite genre! From the combination of pop, soul and funk came the great genre of Rhythm & Blues, more commonly known as R&B. With being able to dance to an upbeat song at a party or just chill in your room and study, R&B can instil a lot of feelings.

If you listen to a lot of R&B songs such as "Promiscuous" by Nelly Furtado or "Be Without You" by Mary J Blige, you'll notice that a lot of them seem to contain the theme of having powerful emotions, more specifically the emotion of love. Whether it's about falling in love, breaking up, platonic love, familial love or even just straight-up songs about sex (whatever makes the songwriter happy I suppose), RnB has always invoked the theme of strong passions. And this doesn't just relate to love. Most have the general theme of generally overcoming your struggles and pursuing success which as a young black man hearing these black artists singing freely about their emotions is probably why the genre and its "baby genres" such as neo-soul, alternative RnB and hip-hop (which will be spoken about in a later post) has spoken to me so well. That and they're just generally good for vibes. But who knows, I'm not a psychologist, just a boy who wanted to share some music. With that, I leave with some RnB artists and their music for you to check out in your free time :)
