Artist Appreciation: Curtis Harding
As the first "Artist Appreciation" post on the blog, I thought it would be good to start with someone small and not quite well-known so today we're going to be looking at gospel/soul American singer Curtis Harding. In my opinion, unless you really look for it, gospel music isn't really common nowadays, pretty much non-existent within the UK (unless you count religious hymns I suppose) Anyway, Curtis Harding describes his own music as "slop 'n' soul" which basically means its a combination of soul and rock music. "slop" symbolizes Southern culture (a sort of food given to pigs) whilst soul represents the music of his youth. I thought this was interesting combining the two genres together, despite their origins in African-American culture, soul and rock music have evolved so much that the two don't seem similar at all.
Anyway, I accidentally stumbled upon Curtis Harding during the finale of the MCU show 'Falcon & The Winter Soldier" where his song "On & On" played during the final. I was immediately blown away and searched for more of his songs on Spotify and before I knew it, five more of his songs were added to my playlists. Curtis reminds me a lot of Cee Lo Green or Stevie Wonder which is great because I feel like their type of music isn't around a lot, which sucks because, my god, it's amazing.
Here's some songs of his to listen to:
